Pain: exhausting, complicated. We'd rather avoid it. Understandable. And yet, if something 'affects' you, you touch the solution.
'Don't try to get away from it, embrace it.'
Change, we want to deal with it. Preferably with limited implications. We say we will 'manage' it. What does that really mean? If it does not hurt, will the change ultimately produce progress?
I see it around me. With clients, with friends, with family. Big things, small things. Very difficult to see pain as an 'invitation' to change.
A conversation, two people, work or private, that doesn't matter. 'Why does she say that, that hurts!' Ah, what does this tell you?
A session, discussion, silence, non-verbal communication. What insights do you get?
A memory, years ago, the company where I work is taken over. The biggest rival the new owner. So many people, so much pain. Meaningful, inclusive process, open communication, where possible. We all share our pain.
Transition, disruption - does real progress exist without pain? Is it truly ‘no pain, no gain’? I keep pondering this question.
